One of the most common causes of food-related illness that can occur (a.k.a food poisoning) is something called cross-contamination (the transfer of harmful bacteria from one food product to another by way of contaminated tools, equipment or hands.  Implementing separate colour-coded cutting boards at home for your budding chefs (and yourself) will prevent cross-contamination (which is something the children are taught in our Kids Kitchen classes).  The children have been explained that it is best to use cutting boards that are suitable for a particular use, making it less likely to cut lettuce on the same board they just used for prepping raw poultry.  You don’t need to adopt the entire system in order to cook more safely at home.  You can simply assign a distinctively coloured cutting board reserved for raw meat i.e yellow.  This will go a long way toward minimizing your chances of a food-related illness.
